About Churchill Downs
For the last 135 years, one of the most famous racetracks in the country has been located on 147 acres in Louisville, Ky. Known for hosting the annual Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs is a staple of Kentucky tourism. It draws people, young and old, famous and ordinary, from around the world and into its gates.
Churchill Downs was opened in 1875, after Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. (grandson of explorer William Clark) worked hard to pull together the investors and funds needed to build the racetrack. It was named after Merewether’s uncles John and Henry Churchill who leased him 80 acres of land to use for the track. After opening and proving successful, Churchill Downs became the premier facility for racing fans. A bigger array of events began to be held at the track in the early 1900’s; auto races, band performances, and festivals are a few examples. In 1986, Churchill Downs was designated a National Historic Landmark. For more history, you can visit the Kentucky Derby Museum, conveniently located inside Churchill Downs.
Louisville, Ky. is the 3rd largest historical preservation district in the United States, and has some remarkable local attractions that accentuate the racetrack. The Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, Louisville Waterfront Park, and the Thomas Edison House are a few that may spark your interest. The city of Louisville is made of filled with museums and culinary attractions as well. Neighborhoods that surround Churchill Downs include Bardstown Road, Waterfront Park, Frankfort Avenue, and Old Louisville (where historical and ghost tours are available!). Fourth Street Live! Is a booming entertainment complex that is located in what was once Louisville’s industrial park section.
If you are familiar with the Derby festival, then you know all about Thunder Over Louisville, the largest fireworks display in the U.S. (which was rated as one of the top 100 events in North America!). The Derby Festival is an annual festival that lasts for two weeks every spring. However, there are other annual festivals occurring throughout the year. Thousands come out for the Forecastle Festival, the Bluegrass Balloon Fest, and the Kentucky State Fair; all are perfect attractions to visit during your trip to Churchill Downs.
